Negotiations on the grain deal under the auspices of the UN have stalled

Negotiations to extend the grain deal have stalled, with some issues failing to be resolved, a source familiar with the discussions told RIA Novosti.

“The negotiation process on the part of Turkey and the UN has not stopped, various initiatives, options are offered. But a stalemate has been created when it is not clear whether the initiative will be continued, whether guarantees will be received on the entry of Russian agricultural products and ammonia to the world markets. These issues must be resolved within a short time,” explained the Agency’s interlocutor.

At the same time he did not rule out that contacts at the highest level could contribute to progress in the negotiations.

The grain deal expires on March 18.

On the eve of the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that the West is burying the humanitarian initiative of UN Secretary General António Guterres by sabotaging the implementation of the Russian part of the package agreement. Smolensk Square also noted that most of Ukraine’s grain does not go to the poorest countries, but rather to the European Union at dumping prices for cattle feed.

Representatives of Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN signed a package of two documents in Istanbul on July 22. The first memorandum deals with the UN obligation to remove restrictions on the export of Russian fertilizers and agricultural products to world markets. The second defines an algorithm for exporting Ukrainian grain from ports in the Black Sea. This package deal is aimed at ensuring global food security.
